The Vocoder - Early Telecom Technology

A vocoder, IPA: [ˈvoʊkoʊdər] (a portmanteau of the words voice and encoder), is an analysis / synthesis system, mostly used for speech in which the input is passed through a multiband filter, each filter is passed through an envelope follower, the control signals from the envelope followers are communicated, and the decoder applies these (amplitude) control signals to corresponding filters in the (re)synthesizer.

It was originally developed as a speech coder for telecommunications applications in the 1930s, the idea being to code speech for transmission. Its primary use in this fashion is for secure radio communication, where voice has to be encrypted and then transmitted. The advantage of this method of "encryption" is that no 'signal' is sent, but rather envelopes of the bandpass filters. The receiving unit needs to be set up in the same channel configuration to resynthesize a version of the original signal spectrum. The vocoder as both hardware and software has also been used extensively as an electronic musical instrument.

The vocoder is related to, but essentially different from, the computer algorithm known as the "phase vocoder".

Whereas the vocoder analyzes speech, transforms it into electronically transmitted information, and recreates it, the voder (from Voice Operating Demonstrator) generates synthesized speech by means of a console with fifteen touch-sensitive keys and a foot pedal, basically consisting of the "second half" of the vocoder, but with manual filter controls, needing a highly trained operator.[1] - Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocoder

T-Mobile Makes Changes and Falls in Line

I went into a T-Mobile store last night to do some research and found out they are changing two of the features that made them different than the other carriers:

1. Their smart phone lineup no longer has Wi-Fi capabilities that will allow you to browse the Internet. However, the phones that do come with Wi-Fi will allow you use the connection to improve your signal.

2. If you purchase a smart phone and add a data plan after June 6Th, you will not be able to drop the data plan.

These changes make sense for T-Mobile, but it takes some of the allure away from being a T-Mobile customer. It's important to know what contract you are getting into, but even more IMPORTANT to know how much room you have for modification while in your contract. Two years is a long time and your standards of living may change. Think forward.

Palm Pre to be Released in Early June

This is the new Palm Pre schedule to be released in early June. The Palm brand is heavily relying on this phone being the "saving grace" in the companies line up. When Palm introduced the Treo, it was the hottest, and most widely used phone on the market. But with Palms inability to update their ancient OS, they could not remain competitive with rival Safari in the iPhone, or the Blackberry OS. The manufacturer chose to exclusively use the Windows Mobile platform for several of it's releases, which failed to gain ground in their rapidly depleting market share. However, the new Palm OS is based on a Linux platform and boasts a shortcuts bar and promotes multi tasking.

With the Treo 800 WX and Treo Pro having dismal releases in 2008 and early 2009, the Pre MUST violate expectations for the company to have a chance at staging a comeback. When the Pre is released, we will see into the future of cell phones... and it may not include a hand held by Palm.

As I have been searching for material to post I find the blog has been taking the form of a "do it yourself" site. Most sites like this are extremely difficult to navigate and are filled with tons of ads. I'm not saying the ads wont increase, but the idea is to keep things simple. Blackberry Storm

This is the coolest phone "in theory" by Blackberry. The click screen is awesome, camera is great, the new face of the Blackberry OS is extremely sharp, and web browsing is great. I love this phone. The only drawback is, it's not quite as fast as the Curve or even The World Phone. If you aren't a previous Blackberry user, then this phone is AMAZING! However, If you're used to the speed of a phone like the Curve, the Storm leaves just a bit more to be desired. But for what you get, I would not complain if I had one.

Prior to the Curve this was "THEE Phone" to have. It's quick, sleek, and slick. The only reason I switched to a Curve was because The World Phone doesn't have a camera or voice recorder. I loved the size of the keyboard.

Blackberry Curve

This is by far my favorite of the Blackberry line. It has everything you could want, except for a touch / click screen. The web if fast, texts are smooth, the camera is sharp. It's what I have on my hip right now. It's a great device. A+

Blackberry Pearl

I have used all of the blackberry smart phones. I am not a fan of the Pearl. Although the OS is identical across the board, the double click to text completely defeats the purpose of having a Blackberry. Great idea for those who want a candy bar phone and are concerned with fitting in.

I saw these in New York City this week. They are incredibly small and the future of cell phones. These devices are laptops and cell phones in one. Roughly 1/2 to 1/3 the size of a Netbook. You can only use a bluetooth headset to communicate through a wireless network. Simply amazing...
